| Vacancy in Systems & I.T. Department - Job Description & Requirements
Introduction Please find detailed below the principal activities and candidate profile for the current vacancy in the Systems & I.T. department of this International Securities House. The job title for this position is 'Systems Support' and the successful candidate will join the team of 4 other IT/Systems staff, who support the 40 or so full-time staff. The department is made up of 2 'Systems Support' staff (who cover 1st Line support and Data Administration), 2 Systems Support & Development Staff (who cover 2nd Line Support and Development). These positions all report to the Systems Manager. This client is a relatively small organisation with a small IT department, however the candidate must have the ability to be flexible and be willing to turn their hand to a number of different tasks within the department. The principles of the department have always been to keep 'things simple', keep as many tasks in house as possible and develop the required experience within the department. Expectations and Other Characteristics of the position · Knowledge preferably with Windows NT experience (although there are plans to upgrade to Windows *****and XP - and this experience would prove useful). · A background knowledge of, or experience of working in, Financial Institutions would also be beneficial. They have a 'trading' environment in Bonds, Unit Trusts and Mutual Funds, and it is very important that the candidate is able to understand the urgency and accuracy required from financial institutions systems and their support, and react accordingly. · It is very important that the incumbent should establish a strong rapport with all users, managers and directors to gain their trust and respect in their day to day work. It is, therefore, imperative that this position must be filled with someone who is able to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely with his or her piers and supervisors. · The person must be flexible and willing to work extended hours as support calls do not necessarily finish at home time! Weekend work will also be required from time to time. · Normal working hours for this position will be from 07:00 until 15:30 however when covering the other Systems Support position (during holidays) the start and finish time may move for example 10:00 to 18:30. The company client base is European and so UK Bank Holidays also need to be covered. · The workflow can be greatly contrasting depending on the coincidence of the number of current support calls and project development tasks that are being undertaken simultaneously. The ability to organise priorities within this workflow is essential, together with the capacity to switch between tasks at random to meet the changing demands of the role. · The candidate must above all be bright and enthusiastic, willing to accept difficult challenges, have a thirst for knowledge in systems and I.T. · They should be interested in the business of the Company, be a team-player and have a strong loyalty to his or her colleagues and employer. · We are willing to take on a younger person who possess the right qualities provided they can demonstrate that they are reliable, hard-working and committed to their work. · We will provide on-the-job training to equip the candidate with the all round skills necessary to carry out the job role. · We will also provide a small but friendly environment to work in, with good staff facilities and benefits. It is a challenging but rewarding Company to work for, and more than half of the staff have at least 5 years service. Main Activities 1. Operational Tasks One of the primary roles of the position is to complete a number of Operational tasks for the start of day, to ensure all systems are up and running before users arrive and commence their day. This will involve ensuring the overnight batch processes and reports have completed successfully. Checks need to be made on all servers to ensure no errors have occurred and backups have been successful, otherwise action will be required. Other tasks will involve running start of day procedures on our Order Management Systems as well as supporting users with general(first line queries) operations issues. It is vitally important that the candidate is able to start at 07:00 in the morning to ensure the systems are working for the trading teams. It is imperative that the candidate is reliable and committed to this role. Some morning reports will need to be run and distributed as well as a number of other systems checks. 2. Static Data Administration As mentioned above, another main area of expertise that would be beneficial is to have an understanding of the Financial Markets. The job role requires this person to cover (holidays and lunch times) and sometimes assist (depending on workloads) in the maintenance of the Company's Security and Counterparty static data. These reference data databases are primarily maintained by the other incumbent on the same level, however it is vital to have cross-cover and in this case it is imperative that the incumbent has a good knowledge in the setting up of Bonds and Funds, and Counterparties on the Company's databases. Because the systems that we use are bespoke, knowledge of Bonds and Funds reference data is more important than familiarity with the systems in use. 3. First line Technical Support The candidate will be expected to provide first line technical support on all hardware and software in use which includes: Software Microsoft Windows NT Server and Workstation Microsoft Windows *****/2002/ *****and XP Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Equisys ZetaFax Microsoft IIS - Web Hosting Microsoft SQL database Websense - Internet Surf Monitoring software MailSweeper - Email checking software McAfee VirusScan Hardware Dell PowerEdge Servers and Dell Precision Workstations Hewlett Packard Printers and Print Servers Cisco Switches, Routers and Firewalls BT Meridian Phone Switch - Datapulse Administrator and Call Logging Reporter Communication Lines:- Analogue, ISDN, ADSL, Leased Circuits 64K - 100Mb Third Party products KVM extenders, TV distribution Financial Institution Products Bloomberg Terminals Reuters Terminals SWIFT Alliance Datastream Advance ISMA - TRAX Euroclear - Euclid PC Bespoke Systems COEXIS - Syn~ Order Management Systems Wilco - CMP running on OpenVMS and Alpha Other Activities 1.
