Rights and Syndication Executive
Summary of department
The Rights & Syndication department manages the intellectual copyright of our clients financial publication, i.e. the articles and charts within the newspaper. This involves selling the content to other publishers, e.g. to newspapers/magazines in other countries, to educational publishers for use in textbooks or to be posted on corporate websites.

Summary purpose of job
The Rights & Syndication Executive’s role is to manage and grow worldwide revenue (ex. North America), from “One-Shots” and “Reprints” and to action a variety of general administration tasks.

[“One-shots” are one-off copyright requests to reproduce content.
“Reprints” are reprints of specific articles and/or surveys customised to the client’s requirements]

Key accountabilities
One-shots and Reprints
Action one-shot copyright requests sent by email, fax and telephone
Action reprint requests sent by email, fax and telephone
Advise/negotiate fees for one-shots/reprints and confirm terms and conditions
Invoice customer and ensure all correspondence is filed
Liaise with internal production and graphics departments
Liaise and negotiate fees with external printing house

Other
Process/field any ad-hoc requests
Look for opportunities to increase revenue/sales
Liaise with Credit Control dept to manage debts and where required chase debtors and collect revenues.
Reconcile sales data and produce monthly sales updates
Code incoming and outgoing invoices
General administration, e.g. order stationery for department
Liaise with various internal departments, suppliers and general public
Sole responsibility for management of syndication section within the corporate website

Decision rights
Freedom to grant copyright permission for the re-use of content and set appropriate fees.
Freedom to decline permission if necessary
Freedom to negotiate “Reprint” orders with customers
Freedom to negotiate rates with printing house for reprint orders

Skills and capabilities profile
Educated to degree level
Minimum one year’s experience in a publishing and/or sales environment
Excellent standard of written and spoken English. Highly numerate
Excellent telephone manner and interpersonal skills
Highly organised and able to prioritise
Advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, E-mail and a minimum typing speed of 40 w.p.m.
Basic understanding of copyright law would be an advantage
Good customer service skills
Articulate with an eye for detail
Positive attitude and proactive
Able and keen to work in a team as well as independently
